Local Success Story- MA’s Ice Cream Q&A with Ashley Boudreau

Over the summer of 2023, you may have encountered a delightful influx of welcoming kiosk-entrepreneurs at our waterfront hubs; introducing new services and infusing vibrancy into our spaces. Join us as we delve into Mom & Daughter duo, Ashley & Mackenzie as they tell us about their experience at the Canso Waterfront Kiosks in the Summer of 2023.

Can you tell me a little about yourself and what inspired you to start a business on the waterfront in Canso?
I am 40 years old and a single mother of three children. I work as a lobster fisherwoman in the months of May and June. My daughter, and business partner, is 16 years old and is very active in sports, especially volleyball. She is very kind-hearted and always has a smile on her face. Being in a small community there isn’t many opportunities for work, so opening up MA’s Ice Cream allows my daughter to make some money.

How did you come up with the idea for this business?
Who doesn’t like ice cream? We have ice cream in near by communities, but by us opening up our ice cream shop, it allows our community to enjoy the tasty treat within walking distance.

What important lessons have you learned from running your own business?
My daughter and I have learned that in order to be successful, you need customers (obviously). It’s very important that we keep our customers happy and also learn to accept suggestions and comments from them as ways to improve our business for the better!

Do you feel like there was community support for your business?
My Daughter and I knew we would have support but our community exceeded our expectations! They were so supportive people and not only did we get support from our locals, but also from tourists.

Can you share a memorable interaction with a customer?
There is no one customer that stood out (other than our tiny, special regulars) but the most memorable moment was when MA’s Ice cream was asked to participate in “The Amazing Race” event that was held during the Canso Regatta. Participants had to stop at our shop and had to get puzzle pieces from a frozen piece of ice and put it together before moving on.

Do you have plans to continue or expand your business? If no, what would be the main reason?
We are excited to continue with MA’s Ice Cream this upcoming summer!

What advice would you give to others who are looking to start their own small business in MODG?
My advice would be to just do it! The MODG has been very helpful, and informative with helping us get started. Not only that, but our community is also amazing with always supporting local.

Do you feel that having the kiosks provided the help that you needed to get your business started?
The Kiosk was a great opportunity for us to start off small and open our eyes to how a business works if we ever decide to take it to the next level down the road!
